Scientist, Bioinformatics

Job Description:
Initiates, directs and executes scientific research and/or development strategies in research and/or development. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems. Plans and executes laboratory research. The incumbent is expected to interact with key individuals in BioProduction, Manufacturing Support, QA, QC and Operations to develop and support optimal workflows. The individual may be responsible for R&D including development of new and/or improved authentication and validation methods, development of new systems and other projects consistent with the goals and objectives of the ATCC. It is expected the incumbent supervises and mentors the staff, while leading by example, and enforces all ATCC corporate policies and procedures. The incumbent may perform research and write grant, contract and patent applications.

Responsibilities

Operation
  • Proactively monitors and replenishes existing biomaterial inventories.
  • Coordinates specific biomaterial activities with Manufacturing Support and BioProduction to support the objectives of the ATCC, if applicable.
  • Characterizes, authenticates and preserves newly accessioned biomaterials.
  • Maintains and supports ATCC’s world-class reputation.
  • Develops processes and procedures to ensure efficient, cost-effective processing of a high-quality biomaterials and reagents.
  • Identifies acquisition opportunities that support ATCC goals and provide appropriate financial return on investment.
  • With supervisor, monitors and adheres to the departmental budget.
Research & Development
  • Develops new and/or improved authentication and validation methods.
  • Develops new biomaterial and reagent groups and systems, as applicable, consistent with the objectives of the ATCC.
  • Responsible for providing leadership and managing a specified biomaterial group and/or R&D team. Management of the biomaterial group includes characterization, authentication, preservation, maintenance and distribution of cell lines, microorganisms, or reagents procured by the incumbent or other individuals within the ATCC.
  • May design, build and direct internal and external research activities and collaborations, as applicable.
  • Interacts with other corporate programs, to foster a productive research environment.
Supervisory Responsibilities, if applicable
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Has authority either directly or through recommendations for employment decisions to include selection, training, performance evaluation, counseling, promotion and termination.
  • Participates in or conducts regular staff meetings to communicate pertinent corporate and program information.
  • Fosters a positive work environment.
  • Leads by example.
  • Ensures staff complies with all safety requirements.
Scientific, Customer and other external interactions
  • Provides scientific expertise to internal and external customers as applicable.
  • Manages interactions with depositors and advisor's as needed/assigned.
  • Manages research collaborations with internal and external groups.
  • Participates in professional activities both internal and external to ATCC.
  • Maintains memberships in appropriate scientific societies.
  • Submits data for publication and/or patent protection when applicable.
  • Keeps abreast of current, relevant literature and technologies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree in a life science field and 2-5 years of relevant experience in the study of bacteria OR
  • Mater's degree in a life science field and 10-13 years of relevant experience in the study of bacteria OR
  • Bachelor's degree in a life science field and 12-15 years of relevant experience in the study of bacteria.
  • Applied or basic research in one or more of the following areas is required: ecology, pathogenesis, industrial application, biochemistry, physiology, genetics or taxonomy.
  • Positions requiring supervisor experience need an additional one to two years of project lead, project management or supervisory experience.
  • Experience in the biotech industry highly desirable.
  • Previous publication or presentations of relevant scientific information required. Must have demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong verbal and written skills.
  • Works on problems of a diverse scope in which analysis of data requires evaluations of identifiable factors.
  • Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
