Job Description:
Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a Scientist Computational Biology to join our Research department located at our Biberacher facility.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • You work as an CompBio Expert within the Computational Biology Group together with members of the Therapeutic Area Partner function and members of the Computational Biology Core function.
  • You establish and develop new analysis strategies specifically in but not limited to areas such as statistical or systems genetics and combine these with methods and data from other omics technologies. You use methods from network biology or machine learning on large integrated datasets for indication discovery or target prioritization.
  • You carry out data analyses to generate and test hypotheses in the context of new therapeutic concepts in collaboration with other members of the Computational Biology group or scientists from BI’s Therapeutic Areas for Drug Discovery (Cardiometabolic Research, Central Nervous System Research, Inflammation & Respiratory Research, Immune Modulation & Research Beyond Borders). You support others and drive projects as the responsible computational biologist.
  • You contribute to projects during all phases from experimental design to downstream analysis as the computational biology specialist in interdisciplinary teams.
  • You take part in infrastructure development by implementing analysis modules/pipelines and automation of interactions between infrastructure components, or requirements analyses for such systems. You contribute to BI’s global computational biology infrastructure in collaborations with bioinformaticians and members of IT and external partners in international teams.
Requirements:
  • You hold a PhD degree or equivalent qualification in Computational Biology, Computer Science, Biostatistics, Statistical Genetics or related fields, ideally with several years of post-PhD experience.
  • You have excellent knowledge and a broad spectrum in bioinformatics and computational biology with a focus on topics in the field of human genetics, statistical / population or systems genetics. You master approaches such as genotype imputation, association mapping, complex trait prediction, assessment of linkage disequilibrium and GWAS. Experience in network / systems biology approaches is a plus.
  • You have several years of experience in R/Bioconductor or Python and at least one additional programming language. You have used relational or noSQL databases in previous projects. You have robust coding skills, experience with version control systems (e.g. git) and constantly strive for well documented and reproducible analyses. In addition you are familiar with Linux, local and cloud-based HPC environments and have experience with tools such as Apache Spark or Hadoop.
  • Your solid background in statistics, machine learning and predictive analytics allows you to choose and use the right methods in statistical testing, classification, regression, linear, non-linear or bayesian models.
  • You are familiar with the analysis of -omics data from initial QC to biological interpretation, specifically for NGS and array based approaches for the analysis of SNPs, structural or copy number variations and similar data. You have analyzed phenomics, eQTL and mQTL data as well as data from sources such as dbGaP, GWAS catalog, HapMap, 1000 Genomes, or ExAC. Integration of heterogeneous data and meta-analysis don't scare you.
  • You have previously demonstrated that you can apply your skills to turn large datasets into relevant insight in concrete biological and disease related topics in interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Your fluency in English both in writing and in speaking will enable you to act in an international working environment.
  • You are characterized by a focused working style, flexibility as well as innovative thinking, and problem solving and analytical skills.
  • You are a reliable team player with excellent organization and communication skills, and with a high degree of motivation.
