A San Diego Biotech company is seeking an experienced Optical Engineer to support and develop optical systems used in a bio-instrument. These systems typically include illumination optics, imaging optics, auto-focusing, image sensor, opto-mechanical components and opto-electrical components. Understand optical and opto-mechanical design is critical for this position. Strong hands-on experience is required. JOB PURPOSE: As a Senior Bioinformatics Engineer in algorithm design and implementation, you will collaborate with scientists and engineers to create software that efficiently processes complex high- resolution images, performs high fidelity feature extraction, DNA sequence analysis and bioinformatic functions JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop algorithms to perform image analysis and base calling
- Translate scientific bioinformatics requirements into technical software designs
- Collaborate with a team of software developers, bioinformatic scientists, biochemistry scientists and engineers to deliver software features and testing algorithms
- Perform data analysis for various scientific projects for next generation sequencing
- Develop secondary analysis pipelines to analyze NGS data
- Optimize algorithm and software solutions for both internal research and development as well as for commercial applications
- Represent bioinformatics in cross functional meetings to gather requirements for design, programming and experiments
- Develop algorithms for all stages of data acquisition of NGS
- PhD in Bioinformatics, Physics, Biophysics, Computational Biology, Molecular Biology or similar
- Strong understanding of genomics, molecular biology and next-generation sequencing
- Excellent communication and organization skills
- 8+ years of experience in similar industry and role
- Strong math skills with the ability to code complex algorithms from publications and equations
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Experience with Python, R or Matlab a plus
