Job Description:
Exciting opportunity to join our Center for Biometric Analysis team this summer! Our Knockout Mouse Project (KOMP) aims to generate 1000 knockout mouse strains over the next 4 years and characterize them through a broad primary phenotyping screen. The mutant mice and the phenotyping data we produce are openly available to the scientific community (www.mousephenotype.org ).

The team is looking to find an enthusiastic and talented Summer Intern to contribute to the quality control of the data generated by KOMP. This summer intern position is designed specifically for individuals enrolled in a 4 year Statistics, Mathematics, Bioinformatics or applicable degree looking to advance their scientific/research training prior to pursuing further educational endeavors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop robust reference ranges for each experimental endpoint delineating biologically impossible and improbably values.
  • Collaborate with domain experts to validate proposed reference ranges
  • Collaborate with Research Assistants to implement the application of these biological reference ranges.
  • Collaborate with statistician and project manager to develop statistical methods and visualization tools to identify biological outliers.
  • Cumulative baseline review
  • Mutant mouse line review
  • Perform statistical analysis to find statistically significant, biologically relevant hits
  • Systematic review of meta-data to ensure mouse detail information is necessary, sufficient, accurate and current
  • Collaborate with statistician and project manager to review and resolve QC issues identified by IMPC Wranglers
Required Skills:
  • Currently enrolled in Statistics, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, or related major.
  • Knowledge about summary statistics, effect size, power analysis.
  • Knowledge about statistical hypothesis testing such as Students’ t-test, ANOVA, Linear regression, nonparametric statistics etc. Previous experience with Generalized linear model, Linear mixed model, etc. preferred.
  • Fluent in R programming language and built in tools such as ggplot. Experience with R shiny, mark down is preferred.
  • The ability to work in a demanding, fast paced, team-oriented environment, while maintaining a high-level of professionalism.
  • Ability to develop technical documents and presentations.
  • Effectively and productively interact with a range of colleagues including senior Faculty, Project Managers, Biostatisticians and Mouse Phenotypers
