The University of Southern Mississippi is looking for a research associate experienced in using bioinformatics tools to analyze microbial metagenomic Next-Generation-Sequencing data from a variety of marine, coastal, and estuarine environments. The objective is to characterize the microbial community structure, composition, diversity, and functional relationships among microbial populations in different ecosystems. The long-term goal is to better understand characteristics of healthy marine microbial ecosystems and be able to predict potential impacts of anthropogenic stressors on ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico and around the world.

The person hired will be physically located at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Miami, Florida. The position is funded by a grant through the Northern Gulf Institute (NGI), a Cooperative Institute of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The person hired will be an employee of the University of Southern Mississippi but will serve as a USM/NGI contractor for NOAA.  Routine daily oversight and postdoctoral mentorship of this employee will be provided by Dr. Christopher Sinigalliano, the principal investigator of the NOAA-AOML Molecular and Environmental Microbiology Program, in collaboration with Dr. Shiao Wang, the principal investigator of this project at USM.
