Postdoctoral Scientist – Bioinformatics MRC Toxicology Unit, Leicester Fixed Term for 5 years Salary £28,935 - £32,648 The Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit, (currently located at the University of Leicester but relocating to the University of Cambridge in 2018), is an internationally renowned institution focussed on the delivery of field-changing mechanistic insights into toxicology and disease.  We are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and provide a supportive and learning environment helping postdoctoral scientists to establish themselves as successful research scientists in their chosen field.  Applications are invited for a postdoctoral scientist/bioinformatician to carry out detailed bioinformatics analysis on large data sets generated from proteomic and transcriptomic studies on localised RNA binding proteins. You will join the post transcriptional control group, led by Professor Anne Willis to work on a project funded by a joint Wellcome Trust Investigator award to Professor Anne Willis and Professor Kathryn Lilley University of Cambridge.  The project is entitled “Transcription, Trafficking, Translation: dissecting the spatiotemporal mechanisms underlying localised protein synthesis”. It is now widely acknowledged that mRNA is spatially organised such that its translation frequently occurs in the vicinity where the corresponding protein product adopts its function.  This phenomenon has been studied extensively in specialised cells, however, recent research has suggested that spatial restriction of mRNA storage and translation is much more widespread. The aims of this project are to define where translation of mRNA takes place in the cell, how this is regulated by protein binding partners and sequence motifs and how this changes upon cellular perturbation. PostDoc/Scientist: Epigenomics and Transcriptomics of Human Diseases Themes: Epigenomics (special focus on underexplored and new types of epigenetic variations), Transcriptomics, Integrate Single Molecule Sequencing (PacBio, Oxford Nanopore) + Illumina, Systems Biology of Human Diseases Job description and Our Unique Expertise: Postdoc fellow and Senior Scientist positions at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (Top-20 medical school in the US) in New York City. Our lab is in the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and the Institute for Genomics and Multi-scale Biology. Our lab (80% computation + 20% experimental) pioneered the fast growing field of bacterial epigenomics with different forms of DNA methylations (e.g. 6mA, 4mC) beyond 5mC (the one extensively studied in human). Recent work by us and others discovered that not only does 6mA exists in eukaryotes including human, but it also has significant functional roles. A major focus of our lab is to explore this young and promising field of 6mA epigenomes, discover other novel types of DNA modifications, their relationship to well-studied DNA/histone modifications, and make fundamentally new discoveries about human diseases: infectious diseases, cancers and mental disorders. We have unique expertise in the use of third generation sequencing (single molecule real-time, ~20kbp read length, and the emerging nanopore technique) with advantages of detecting different types of DNA modifications, single molecule-level epigenetic phasing, full-length transcript isoforms, complex structural variations. Successful candidates will have unique opportunities to i) build on our unique expertise, large scale collection of clinically relevant samples and a strong network of collaborators, ii) take the lead role in multiple projects on the innovative use of third-generation sequencing and systems biology to pioneer the mapping and characterization of novel forms of DNA methylations in eukaryotic genomes for both basic biology and clinical applications. Compensations for successful candidates are highly competitive. Subsidized housing (in New York City) is also available.
